Port Alberni’s Dan Sexton has won the Labour Day Salmon Derby for the second time
His 23 lb. 14 oz chinook brought in Sunday from Pill Point held on to take the $10,000 top prize
He said he’s been fishing in the derby for the past 30 years and says he was just lucky to catch the biggest fish
“Sometimes you get lucky,” he said. “We’re very fortunate. It’s not your choice in how big the fish are that grab it. Sometimes you get lucky, and that’s exactly what happened for us.”
Sexton won the Labour Day Derby in 1998 with a 43 pounder.
He says fish have definitely gotten smaller over the years, but the desire to go fishing has never diminished for him.
The other derby winners were David Thibeau from Port Alberni who took top spot on Saturday with a 23 lb 4 oz fish, and Steve Smith who raced down the Bamfield road to weigh his 22 lb 4 oz fish just minutes before the closing bell on Monday.
