ACRD starts Transportation Committee

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District will be forming a Transportation Advisory Committee, whose top priority will be to suggest alternatives or improvements to Highway 4.

The Committee will be made up of ACRD member areas along with each west coast First Nation and business groups, all of whom have expressed concerns about the Cameron Bluffs fire and subsequent road closure.

Beaufort Area Director Fred Boyko urged the new group to do better than past committees.

“How is this going to be different than the previous things that have looked at the Horne Lake Connector a few years ago? How are we going to actually achieve something because this is impacting our businesses every day with no end in sight,” he said. “We need to have some actual, actionable objectives that are different from what has happened in the past two decades because nothing has happened.”

Tofino businesses reported a collective loss of more than $44 million during the first few weeks of the highway shutdown.

The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce is putting together a similar study to add to the economic argument for improvements.
