In the wake of community concerns around the arrest of parents who broadcast their capture of an alleged child predator on social media, Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Brian Hunter released a statement to the media late Friday afternoon.
Hunter said police are aware and can appreciate the discussion this incident has generated in the community and on social media, but the investigation is ongoing, and their inability to release all of the information has likely contributed to concerns.
Police confirmed their investigation includes that a male was allegedly lured to the home and was met by three adults, and they have launched a criminal investigation into circumstances that lead to the alleged assault and forcible confinement of the man who continues to be the focus of a child luring investigation.
Local social media sites lit up over the weekend, with people criticizing police and pledging protests if the parents are charged.
Hunter asked for patience, and said vigilante actions are not only illegal and put people in danger, but also have the potential to compromise the original investigation.
No charges related to the incident have been announced.
