A contentious event scheduled for tonight has been cancelled after unprecedented public push-back.
Tanya Gaw from a group called action4canada was originally scheduled to hold a public event at Char’s Landing, but after an outcry against the beliefs of the group it was cancelled.
One of their positions according to online videos is against reconciliation and a disbelief surrounding the attrocities of residential schools
Tseshaht Chief Councillor Ken Watts said his hereditary chiefs made the unprecedented announcement of saying Gaw is not welcome in their territory
“I don’t know when was the last time they said that about anybody,” he said. “They ‘ve seen some of the comments that individuals have made not just about our people but everyone else, so when they say that it’s pretty serious. They don’t need those types of statements or those types of individuals saying those types of things and spreading those kinds of ideologies even more than they might already exist, not only here locally but also abroad.”
Yesterday, Port Alberni City Council further endorsed Tseshaht’s position and said the group would be prohibited from using city spaces for any events.
We reached out to the local organizer for comment but she hasn’t replied to our requests for an interview.
