Pool planning continues

The Alberni Valley Aquatic Centre Advisory Committee met yesterday to begin planning their next stage of public consultations.

Representatives from HCMA Architecture plan to launch an online survey that matches amenities with costs, showing how the addition of a wave pool or more swimming lanes will affect the overall project cost and individual tax bills.

Replacing the 57 year old Echo Pool will cost at least $40 million and costs will be shared among areas through a formula that balances population and property values in the various electoral areas.

Beaufort representative Fred Boyko said more work needs to be done to encourage participation in the next survey since only 5% of Alberni Valley residents participated in phase one.

“How are we going to get more feedback from the people?” asked Boyko. “If we’re going to spend tens of millions of dollars we should try and endeavour to get more than 5% or 6% of the population.”

The regional district plans to dive into the next phase of consultations beginning at the end of this month.
