The Hole in the Wall has become a political hot potato as neither owners nor interest groups want to deal with safety issues.
The site of a former waterpipe has become a local attraction for the past few years, but access has become an issue with people either parking on the highway shoulder, or at Coombs Country Candy where they have to race across three lanes of traffic just below a blind corner.
Regional District staff recently met with MOSAIC and the Ministry of Transportation, and neither wanted to take the lead on making safer access to the trails.
Michael McGregor, ACRD Lands and Resources Coordinator said the regional district also can’t lead the project unless the trail is designated an ACRD service.
He warned If the ACRD were to abstain from leading the development of Hole in the Wall under a park service, the current landowners could take steps to restrict access and/or eliminate unsafe parking locations.
Directors asked McGregor to begin a feasibility study about making the area a regional park or a Cherry Creek Community Park.
