A city councillor’s efforts to improve Canal Beach faced opposition from fellow councillors this week.
John Douglas wants the city to build a deck on the former plywood mill pier, after removing the original decking a few years ago due to safety concerns.
Deb Haggard said the plan is a passion project for Douglas, and not part of council’s strategic plan.
Concerns were also raised about consultation with First Nations, since the property borders a Tseshaht reserve.
Douglas championed the development of Canal Beach when he was Mayor almost a decade ago.
He was urged to put together a plan for council consideration in next year’s budget.
