Firefighters spent the night in the woods off 16th Avenue, patrolling for hotspots after dousing a dangerous forest fire.
The fire in Dry Creek Park brought crew from all valley fire departments and a BC forest fire unit.
Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owens said crews hit the blaze hard given the close proximity to homes and new developments.
“There is the new development at the end of Anderson that would have been of some concern had the fire continued to grow at the same rate that it was when we initially arrived on scene,” he said. “Thankfully the hard work of all the valley firefighters as well as the BC Wildfire Service prevented us from needing to conduct any evacuation.”
Smoke from the fire was visible throughout Port Alberni last night, and had neighbours worried.
The fire was held to one hectare of forest, and investigators will be on scene this morning to determine the cause.
