May in Alberni “hot and dry”

While many island communities set records for the warmest month of May, Port Alberni didn’t quite hit that.

We had two daily temperature records last month, hitting 34.3 degrees on May 15 and 30.5 on May 17.

The average mean temperature for May in Alberni is 11.8 degrees and was 15.7 last month according to Environment Canada meteorologist Louis Kohnyi.

“The temperatures in May were really hot but they didn’t reach the all-time maximum temperature record for May,” he said. “If we look at the mean precipitation for May is 89.5mm and in May 2023 only 17mm of rain was recorded, so May 2023 in Port Alberni was hot and very dry.”

Last month was the hottest May on record in Comox at 16.1 degrees, Nanaimo at 15.7 and Campbell River at 15.2.
