Port Alberni resident judge Alexander Wolf says more emphasis should be placed on restorative justice models like sentencing circles.
He said the circles have been used for years in Yukon and Northwest Territories, and have more recently been employed in Vancouver as well as the small west coast villages of Ahousaht and Opitsit.
Judge Wolf made the comments during sentencing an assault case yesterday, and said it would be a perfect case to bring the accused and victim together along with a judge, legal counsel, families, friends and elders.
He urged defense and crown counsel to work together to bring the program to Alberni.
