Directors debate ATV access

Regional District Directors are trying to deal with recent conflicts between users of the popular Log Train Trail.
Negative interations between some ATV riders with hikers, cyclists and horseback riders have led to a series of surveys, public workshops and open houses.
Currently, motorized use is not allowed on a 3 kilometre stretch owned by the regional district, but that ban is not enforced.
Beaufort Area Director Fred Boyko says ATV’s and motorized vehicles should be allowed on the trail.
“You have a lot of people using the trails with ATV’s. They’re the people who maintain them,” he said. “I don’t see people with horses riding around with chainsaws taking down trees and fixing the trails.”
ACRD staff and consultants presented the board with initial options including non-motorized sections of the trail, eliminating all motorized vehicles, do nothing, or divest in the trail altogether.
The final plan will be developed over the next few months before presentation in August.
