One person is confirmed dead after a fire at the notorious Wintergreen Apartments on lower 4th Avenue.
The fire broke out shortly before midnight and required Port Alberni’s ladder truck along with the support of Beaver Creek, Sproat Lake and Cherry Creek volunteer fire departments.
While the fire appears to be most serious in the southeast rear corner of the building, all of the occupants were forced to leave, along with some people living in the neighbouring trailers.
According to a press release from the City of Port Alberni, details surrounding the fire and the identity of the deceased individual are not being released pending further investigation.
Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owens will be holding a press conference this afternoon.
