Mayor Sharie Minions is warning people away from putting the $5.2 million Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Grant towards the construction of a new aquatic centre.
She says this recent grant can’t be combined with other federal or provincial programs, and the city is looking for much larger grants to build the pool.
“I think our expectation at the city is when we proceed with the pool we’ll be looking at a much larger grant, possibly looking at what other communities have gotten in the range of $15 million,” she said. “So we wouldn’t want to forego $15 for using this $5 million, although there’s probably some relevant work that we could fund through it.”
Minions said engagement work has begun at the regional district level towards the new pool, and the city is looking to spend some of the $5.2 million on trail development and city road asset inventory and management.
