Local groups discuss addiction issues

More than 125 people involved in helping locals with addictions issues, came together earlier this week in a desperate search for strategies.

Tseshaht First Nation’s Crisis Care and Wellness coordinator Gail K. Gus said poisoned drugs are killing people at an alarming rate, and said leaders need to push for healing, detox and stabilization facilities.

“We need a detox, stabilization and long-term treatment because the drugs are different now,” she said. “Six week treatment centres are not doing the trick. We need to address the elephant in the room of unresolved trauma.”

Gus said the members of the Community Action Team were critical in bringing all the various agencies and organizations together.

She said organizers are now working on a final report, which will be presented when the groups reconvene.
