No plans for promised park

Representatives from the West Coast Native Healthcare Society (Rainbow Gardens) said they have no plans for a previously promised replacement park in the Westporte neighbourhood.

They were invited to speak to city council about the issue after area residents raised concerns about how the last remaining playground in the area was removed to make room for their expanded seniors facility.

Mayor Sharie Minions said the city and healthcare society both made promises about parks to Westporte residents, which have yet to be fulfilled.

“The city also committed at that point to building an alternative park and to spending the roughly $300,000 from the land sale on building that park, so there were multiple commitments made on Rainbow Gardens and our end that have not been fulfilled to date,” she said. “I think the important peice today is to bring that conversation back, see what’s needed, see where the best location is, and then start to talk about how that park will get funded.”

Society Board Chair Derek Appleton said any landscaping or greenspace areas wouldn’t be built until after the second phase of their building project is complete, but is dependant on BC Housing and CMHC funding.
