Port Alberni police report a 30% increase in call volume yesterday afternoon during the snowstorm.
Constable Richard Johns said there were 7 MVI’s reported yesterday before 5 pm, including one that tied up traffic at Third and Redford.
“Not only was there issues with speed and the weather, there was also some impairment that was involved,” he said. “Obviously with the weather, safety is the number one concern and adding impairment to driving does not help that situation whatsoever.”
Johns said the driver of the offending vehicle was given a 90-day roadside prohibition, had their vehicle impounded, and could face further charges of driving too fast for road conditions.
The crashed caused chaos for almost an hour as two semi-trucks got stuck trying to go around the crash site, while other motorists using 4th Avenue found the hill extremely slippery which almost caused another multi-vehicle incident.
There were no injuries in any of yesterday’s MVI’s.
