Construction is underway on 22 safe and secure homes in Port Alberni for women and their children leaving violence.
Sage Haven Society will operate the new building on Rosewood Street, which will be the first second-stage housing project for women in the Alberni Valley according to executive director Ellen Frood.
“Residents would stay between 6 and 18 months in second-stage housing,” she said. “There’s support in terms of educational opportunities, financial literacy, how to be a good renter, and helping people gain those kinds of skills so they can move on into the rental market.”
The update and announcement was held on Friday, marking the first of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
Frood says they’re hoping construction will be completed by this summer.
