A very busy night for Port Alberni firefighters with 9 call-outs involving 4 fires, according to Fire Chief Mike Owens.
“Nine separate events for night shift last night,” he said. “We were out at some incident for the majority of the evening.”
At 8:30 last night they were called to assist Sproat Lake fire crews attacking a fully-involved shop fire.
Shortly after midnight crews were called out to Catalyst Mill where the hog pile was on fire.
Two crews battled the fire buried deep in the mountain of shredded wood fibre used to help power the mill.
Then at 4:30 a cooking fire in an apartment on Redford Street got out of hand, setting off fire alarms and sending the lone occupant to hospital for smoke inhalation.
Then an hour later, crews were called back to the hog pile after it flared up again, and at 8 this morning they finally returned to the station, leaving Catalyst crews to monitor for hot spots.
