Violence cancels ‘Nights Alive’

A popular teen event has been cancelled because of violence.
Manager of Recreation Services Shawn Bourgoin said a number of incidents this year at ‘Nights Alive’ culminated in a large fight outside Gyro Centre in October.
He said concern for the safety of city staff and the youth led to the decision to cancel the event pending a review in the new year.
“It is a very important program to have in our community, we just need to make sure that the staff that are running it are safe and the youth are kept safe, and that we’re able to manage any external factors that may be working against the Nights Alive program,” he said.
Nights Alive happened every Wednesday and every second Saturday offering dinners, games, and occassional field trips to places around the city.
Bourgoin said he’s hoping other groups will step up and offer youth and teen events in the absence of the popular program.
