Once the youngest member of city council, Charles Mealey is returning to city council after a 14-year absence.
Mealey said he’s honoured to have received the most votes of any the six councillors elected.
“I honestly thought people might have forgotten about me after all these years,” he said. “I just lived the same way for the last 14 years, trying to be a good citizen and a good Port Albernian, and I’m just overwhelmed that I got the most votes and I thank the people of Port Alberni for that.”
Mealey said his experience will allow him to hit the ground running, and he’s already looking forward to jumping into the budgetting process and seeing where a new aquatic centre fits in.
He received more than 2200 votes, or 44.6% of total votes cast.
Incumbent Debbie Haggard came second with almost 2200 votes, followed by fellow incumbent councillor Cindy Solda, newcomer Dustin Dame, former Mayor and councillor John Douglas, and retired Crown Counsel lawyer Todd Patola.
