Seniors housing development begins

Construction has begun on a new seniors complex on the former ADSS grounds.
Built by the Vancouver Resource Society, they have 12 similar facilities in the province including Ross Place in Victoria and Long Lake in Nanaimo
VRS Director of Development Brad Tome said the city’s decision to reduce development cost charges was one reason they chose to invest here.
“Development Cost Charges can be relaxed for a number of reasons and it creates a community partnership that is recognized by BC Housing and CMHC to allow us to qualify for other tiers of financing,” he said. “Port Alberni has been really progressive, so we came here and found a community that was prepared and ready, and knew the need as we did, so we worked together and found a solution.”
Called “Timberline at North Park” the 102-unit retirement community features both all-inclusive and rent controlled suites.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the city identified seniors housing as a need, and is happy to welcome this project.
“It is amazing,” she said. “102 units of seniors housing is going to address a huge need in our community. This next level of option is incredibly important to our community.”
VRC plans to open the Port Alberni facility in 2 years
