Port Alberni politicians are in Whistler this week for the annual Union of BC Municipalities convention.
Mayor Sharie Minions said they’ll be meeting personally with the Premier and with other Ministers, and attending educational sessions and discussions with other BC leaders.
“UBCM is the conference that I would say has the most value in the types of sessions that go on,” she said. “Being able to have our whole council here, really making sure that we’re covering all of the sessions, instead of being split and missing several of them, it’s a great opportunity and we’re debriefing each day and really hearing what each person has learned and there will be some great take-aways from this conference as there always is.”
Minions said she met with the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions yesterday.
“We have a couple very specific and very concerning situations with specific people in our community who are not being cared for properly, who are really dealing with mental health and addiction issues,” she said. “We’re here at UBCM asking for a plan for specifically one of those people.”
Minions said she was part of a housing panel with Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, speaking about the 4th Avenue sleeping pods project, and comparing it to other local initiatives to help the homeless throughout BC
She met Tuesday with the Minister of Transportation regarding the proposed River Road roundabout at Beaver Creek Road.
Some Alberni Clayoquot Regional District directors, and representatives from West Coast First Nations are also at the conference which wraps up on Friday.
