Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District directors voted in favour of a 15% raise along with other remuneration increases.
Board Chair John Jack says directors are not given a salary but are paid per meeting.
“Directors get paid per meeting, and that includes committee meetings as well as attending things like the Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities and the Union of BC Municipalities,” he said. “When they get paid on a per-meeting basis it really depends on the willingness of a director to get out there and do more.”
Jack is pleased about new funding for childcare expenses, which he hopes will encourage younger people to run for office.
The changes were recommended by an independent panel of former regional district directors and don’t take effect until after the next election in October.
