Vandalism has caused property crime numbers to increase by 37% from 53 to 73 cases in the rural areas.
Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Eric Rochette said 29 of those cases were mischief to property or vandalism, an increase of more than 50% from 19 to 29 comparing the second quarter of this year and last within the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District areas.
“We’ve been having some problems with people damaging gates to access MOSAIC properties,” he said. “The rest is general vandalism in different locations. A trend like that, with 53% you can try to refocus to find out why, but looking at the files I couldn’t really pinpoint a reason.”
Rochette said he is requesting two more officers from the province given the ever-increasing calls for service in Bamfield, and predicting that trend will increase further once road improvements are complete.
