Alberni Valley Search and Rescue crews worked through the night to rescue a pair of hikers who had rapelled into a gulley on Mt. Arrowsmith and couldn’t get out.
Search Manager Mike Riddalls said a helicopter had to be called in as the terrain was too difficult for ground crews to reach.
“Two hikers hiking up on Mt. Arrowsmith got stuck in a gulley about 1500 metres up, really close to the top,” he said. “They were well equipped and well-experienced but if you get off the main route and there’s a couple of gulleys up there that can trap people.”
Riddals said 14 local searchers were called out at 10 last night to rescue the hikers, who were not injured.
