With the construction boom throughout the island, local landfills are dealing with a increase in waste.
It’s estimated 20% of landfill waste comes from housing construction, renovation and demolition.
While drywall and gyproc gets pulled out and sent to a reprocessing facility, ACRD Solid Waste Manager Paulo Eichelberger says wood waste gets ground up and becomes part of their organics recycling program
“Wood waste typically goes in as a bulk filling agent,” he said. “We’ll have it diverted, we’ll shred it, then we take a lot of that material and work it into our organics program.”
Eichelberger says organics remain the largest category of things that can be removed from the landfill waste stream, and continues to be their main focus.
