Members of the Hupacasath council are angry after they felt left out of National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations.
The city joined with the Tseshaht First Nation in recognizing a former village site that once existed where the Harbour Quay is today.
Hupacasath Chief Councillor Brandy Lauder said in a press release that hupacasath people who attended the ceremonies were made to feel like they were visitors in their own territory.
Lauder blames the city for the lack of communications and understanding of protocol, and said there is still much work to do towards reconciliation.
While Tseshaht and Hupacasath share many family ties, the two First Nations both lay claim to significant overlapping areas of the Alberni Valley.
