City Council approved a $3 million project to reduce the amount of raw sewage being pumped into the harbour.
Mayor Sharie Minions said the problem has been going on for a long time but the city just recently discovered the Argyle Street forcemain was pumping raw sewage along with overflow rainwater directly into the harbour just a stones throw from the Harbour Quay.
A previously problematic forcemain crossing the Somass River was recently repaired after it was discovered to be leaking sewage.
Council agreed to delay some smaller infrastructure projects in order to put monies towards separating storm water from sewer main lines.
