Wet weather helps salmon escapement

The cool, wet weather has been good for sockeye salmon, but not for those wanting to catch them.

More than 17,000 sockeye have made it through the counters, with most going into the Sproat Lake system and only 500 returning to Great Central so far.

According to the Assessment Update released yesterday, high water conditions have hampered fishing efforts as only 6,000 fish have been caught in the Tsu-ma-uss food fishery and less than 100 have been caught by recreational anglers.

DFO believes the total run size is around 400,000 fish, but will reassess that forecast in two weeks.
