Smudging case faces appeal

The Candace Servatius case is back before the courts.

The Port Alberni woman launched a lawsuit against the school district after her children were made to watch an Indigenous smudging in the classroom at John Howitt Elementary in 2015

The appeal of the original decision to dismiss the case is being funded by the Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Reforms.

Lawyers representing Servatius want the school district to apologize for infringing on her families evangelical beliefs and a promise to not allow smudging or Indigenous prayers in schools.

The appeal concludes today in Vancouver.
