A Port Alberni man managed to fight off a cougar that attacked his small dog Wednesday night, outside his Timberlane Road home.
Mark Payne said he let his dog outside around 8:30 pm when a cougar pounced on the pet.
He rushed in to save his dog, kicking the cougar three times in the ribs, causing the cat to release the pet.
Payne suffered minor lacerations on his legs, and his dog is also recovering from her injuries.
Conservation Officers and a canine handler are now in the area to track down the cougar, and are asking people to stay away from the area and nearby trails.
