A 30-year old Port Alberni man was sentenced to 14-months jail for assaulting his spouse in April 2021.
Judge Alexander Wolf told Patrick Lucas he was very close to being sent to a federal penitentiary for beating and choking the woman he shares 10 children with.
Lucas is the biological father of Dontay Lucas, who was killed four years ago, and said he started drinking heavily after that.
He has a history of intimate partner violence, is considered a moderate to high risk to reoffend, and will undergo counselling while in jail.
