Hotel and Airbnb guests will be paying a 2% municipal regional district tax after local hoteliers agreed to restore the levy.
The tax was scrapped more than a decade ago after some hotel owners objected to how it was being administered.
City Economic Development Manager Pat Deakin says the tax should be in place by next summer.
“It’s a 4 to 6 month process and if it is approved then all properties with 4 rooms or more in the city and in the Alberni Valley electoral areas would be required to collect the MRDT,” he said.
The fund will now be administered by Peter Mugglestone, the former owner of the Best Western Barclay Hotel.
The money collected goes towards tourism marketing for the Alberni Valley.
