Phoenix fire displaces 15 residents

More than a dozen people in supportive care have been displaced from their rooms at the Phoenix House after fire broke out in one of the suites.

Port Alberni firefighters were called to the building at 3:30 yesterday morning, and saw flames coming from multiple first floor windows.

Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owens said three residents were taken to hospital and all 15 who lived there have been displaced.

“My understanding is that there were three individuals who were seen by BC Ambulance and subsequently transported to West Coast General,” he said. “I also understand that there were 15 people who were living in that building at the time of the fire, and all 15 were displaced.”

Owens said some of those displaced were taken in by their families, others were given beds at Port Alberni Shelter and the warming centre.

While the fire is believed to have started in one of the suites, investigators will be on scene to determine the specific cause of the blaze.
