Literacy Alberni officials say they will survive after being ordered to pay $330,000 in damages.
Supreme Court Justice Andrew Mayer upheld the judgement against Literacy after their former Executive Director Graham Hughes made defamatory statements against the Port Alberni Shelter Society.
Literacy’s current executive director Lesley Wright says the organization will find a way to meet their obligations.
“We can survive this,” said Wright. “We’re going to run our programs as we have for the past two years. We just really want to get past this and rebuild and reconnect with our community partners. We have so many projects that everyone is excited about, that have been put on the backburner and we just want to move forward into the work.”
Literacy Alberni was found to be vicariously liable for the grave misconduct of their former executive director against John Douglas and Wes Hewitt from the Port Alberni Shelter Society.
Wright could not comment about possible civil action against Hughes.
