Salvation Army exceeds fundraising goal

The Port Alberni Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign exceeded expectations for the second year in a row.

Captain Michael Ramsay said donations far exceeded their goal of $100,000.

“We were blessed to be able to raise $143,000 to help out those in need in our community, which was a particular need this year with the opioid crisis as well as COVID has really hit our community and the whole world quite hard,” he said.

Ramsay said they distributed 500 hampers to families for Christmas, and 400 kids received toys that might not have otherwise had gifts under the tree.

He said 100% of money collected in the Alberni Valley stays here, and continues to fund the Bread of Life foodbank, the hot meals program, and the warming centre.
