Controversial property owner wants to comply

Randy Brown says he wants to get rid of his controversial properties on 4th Avenue, but he’s concerned about the people who will be displaced.
He said he wants to comply with municipal bylaws and remove the trailers and renovate the apartment building, but he wants the city to take responsibility for the tenants.
“There will be no trailers down there eventually, and hopefully the city can find housing for these guys so we can move the trailers,” he said. “I’m going to start on Wintergreen right away and try to do the upgrades there. Obviously I’m going to have to have people out to do that so hopefully I can find places for them to go in the meantime.”
Brown says he’s been divesiting of properties as he puts resources into his Sports Club on Third Avenue, and also work towards eventual retirement.
Mayor Sharie Minions said while housing people is a provincial issue, not a municipal one, the city has been meeting with other agencies to address issues at that property.
“We have brought together a taskforce to address this property specifically because we believe people are being put at risk by how they’re being housed at that property,” she said. “We are looking at options in partnership with Tseshaht, Hupacasath, the Port Alberni Friendship Centre and Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.”
