Forestry workers blockade highway

More than 100 forestry workers and their families blocked Highway four for almost an hour yesterday.

Glen Cheetham of the Steelworkers Union says they’re tired of being left out of provincial policy developments that affect their lives and livlihoods.

“They go through these processes for deferrals but they don’t engage all of the stakeholders in the process when they come up with their decisions, and people are tired of that,” he said. “It can be devastating to the rural communities that helped to get them elected, and the job losses that can come with some of their decisions without the stakeholders having a say in the decision making process can be absolutely devastating, and people have had enough.”

Cheetham said the latest provincial old growth strategy was developed after consultation with environmental groups, but not the forest companies or union representatives.

More than a dozen logging trucks also aided in the protest, blocking off the intersection of Johnston and Tebo in front of MLA Josie Osborne’s office.
