Illegal camp blockaded

Members of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation are blocking the West Main forest service road because of illegal camping.

More than a hundred people are believed to be camping along the shores of Kennedy Lake, with many ignoring the fire ban, and illegally disposing of waste.

18-year old Tim Masso said he was disgusted with how many of the campers were disrespecting the land and environment, and decided to erect the blockade.

He was quickly joined by other Tla-o-qui-aht members in support.

Tla-o-qui-aht Chief Councillor Moses Martin is calling for a meeting with all levels of government and tourism officials to find a solution.

Concerns have been raised with the Alberni – Clayoquot Regional District Board about an increase in illegal camping on many side roads between Port Alberni and the west coast.
