The new garbage collection system will begin roll-out in the next few weeks, as compost and recycling carts are delivered to homes in Port Alberni.
Mayor Sharie Minions says while homeowners will see a $4 per month increase in their garbage collection costs, the bulk of the initial costs were covered by a government grant.
“We’re really fortunate that we got a $6 million grant that is providing for the cost of the bins as well as some of the infrastructure that needs to be upddated,” she said. “At the end of the day, for an increase in cost of $4 a month we’re implementing this system, extending the life of our landfill, we’re diverting our waste, and we’re still going to have the second lowest cost of this service on Vancouver Island.
Starting September 13th, compostables will be collected every week in the city, while recycling and trash will be picked up on an alternating biweekly schedule.
Compost and garbage collection schedules and reminders are available through the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District’s Sort & Go app, which can be downloaded from their website.
The service will begin in rural areas later this year.
