Local fire crews were busy over the weekend, responding to medical calls and motor vehicle incidents.
Yesterday, crews responded to a fire in a stairwell at the Beaufort Hotel which was extinguished quickly.
Residents were evacuated but were not displaced.
Port Alberni Fire Department Deputy Chief Wes Patterson says even though there is no campfire ban, people should be extremely cautious if cooking outside today.
“Make sure you havebody in attendance at the campfire at all times, because with this extreme heat and low humidity, if we get a fire start it’s going to create extreme fire behaviour for us,” he said.
Patterson recommends using a propane stove or barbeque instead of a campfire for the next few days.
The temperature at the Alberni airport reached 41.2ºC yesterday, which was just 0.5ºC shy of the all time high temperature record of 41.7ºC set July 10, 1926.
Temperatures are expected to begin cooling tomorrow.
