The local Board of Education has chosen a new name for A.W. Neill School.
The board voted to change the name two years ago, after community reaction to Neill’s racist decisions while serving as Alberni’s mayor, MLA and Member of Parliament from 1921 to 1945.
School District board chair Pam Craig said the school will be named after a local waterway that unites the community.
“So the chosen name is ‘Tsuma-as’ which is the Indigenous pronunciation of Somass, so the school will be named Tsuma-as Elementary,” she said.
Craig says SD70 Pacific Rim will advise the Ministry of Education of the name change, and new signs on the school will be unveiled in September.
