Port Alberni’s building boom continues with new multifamily homes being built throughout the city.
Yesterday, city council approved the next phase of development on the former ADSS lands.
Ten 4-plexes and six duplexes will be built there, and another multifamily building was approved for Swallow Drive.
Mayor Sharie Minions said she’s pleased the housing market is diversifying
“We’re up to 3% vacancy for housing which is the minimum level that a healthy housing market should have, and that’s before all of the affordable housing projects under construction or approved and in planning stages,” she said. “Port Alberni is now in the top ten communities in the province for the number of housing starts per capita, and that’s something drastically different from what we’ve seen in the past.”
According to the report, 194 new dwellng units will be needed by 2025, much of that being addressed by a few multifamily and affordable housing projects throughout the city.
70% of housing in the Alberni Valley is single family homes, almost half of which were built before 1960.
A long-awaited report on industrial lands was also released yesterday, showing a shortage of developed lands available for larger projects.
The airport, top of Burde Street and Link Mill site were listed as the main candidates for industrial use, but none of the areas have water and sewer services, and building the infrastructure would cost millions of dollars.
