Region rolls out new garbage collection system

The city and regional district are getting ready to roll out a new garbage collection system this spring.
A new organics program will see food and yard waste collected every week, while garbage and recycling will be picked up on alternating weeks.
Organics coordinator Jodie Frank says the yard waste bin will be larger than the current garbage cans.
“The organics cart will actually be larger than you garbage cart so that during the spring and summer season you can top up your cart with yard and garden waste,” she said. “It will be around 240 litres capacity where the standard size for a garbage can in approximately 120 litres.”
Frank says food waste makes up the bulk of what goes into garbage cans, and kitchen and yard waste will be processed locally at Earth, Land and Sea.
The city will also take over recycling collection, and blue bins will be replaced by carts.
The cost of garbage collection will also be going up by 36% from $11 to $15 per month.
Residents will start learning more about the process and will begin receiving new carts before the new system starts in June.
