A group of young hikers from Victoria had to be airlifted off Mount Arrowsmith on the weekend, after two of the hikers were injured.
Alberni Valley Rescue Squad search manager Dave Poulsen said they located the trio after an emergency call came in at 3pm Sunday, and were airlifted from their precarious position by a 442 squadron cormorant helicopter at 9:30 that night.
“They were basically all stuck together and all holding on,” he said. “They were in a position where if one of them let go, then more than likely more than one of them would have fallen.”
The group were flown to hospital in Comox, and one of the hikers was then sent to a trauma unit with serious injuries.
Paulsen says recent heavy snowfalls have made the trails and backcountry areas around Mount Arrowsmith extremely dangerous.
