Port Alberni paper mill gets $13 million boost

Paper Excellence is investing $13 million in their Port Alberni Paper Mill to expand production of food grade wrappers.

Company vice-president Graham Kissack says as the newspaper and writing paper markets continue to decline, the need for take-away food wrappers is increasing dramatically.

“There’s no question this is a reflection on the changing paper marketplace,” he said. “People have noticed the disappearance of newspapers and telephone books but at the same time there are new markets popping up, so people go to a coffee shop and they take a cookie away, chances are paper that cookie is wrapped in could have been made on the Port Alberni machines.”

Kissack says the upgrades will allow both local machines to produce food grade paper while still making a variety of specialized paper products for clients around the world.
