The City of Port Alberni just received a $3.5 million grant from the province to help offset the costs of COVID-19.
City finance manager Andrew McGifford said smaller cities like Port Alberni received a higher per-capita grant, and the money could go towards new projects or paying down the municipal debt.
“The funding is for the operational needs of the City of Port Alberni,” he said. “This could include any upgrades or retrofitting that we need to undertake. It also could address any borrowed funds that we need to remove from the capital reserve which we haven’t yet, but as we move into the new year we have to keep an eye on the cash flow and continue to be mindful of the impact on the community.”
McGifford said he will bring a report to council in January along with the draft financial plan.
