No anti-mask tickets in Port Alberni

Port Alberni Police haven’t ticketted anyone for not wearing a mask, but they have been called upon to speak to some people.

Corporal Jason Racz says RCMP and other enforcement agencies have the ability to ticket people for violations under the emergency programs act, but have been able to bring people into compliance just by talking to them so far.

“For the most part people have been cooperative and compliant as everybody want to do their part to mitigate risks to themselves and the people around them,” he said. “We’ve beeen pretty successful in getting cooperation from people we’ve had to deal with and incidents that have been reported to us.”

Corporal Racz says there was an incident last month at the Tseshaht Market involving a man who refused to wear a mask, and after further investigation he was arrested on warrants out of Quebec and remains in custody.
