Attic fire damages Elizabeth Street home

A home on Elizabeth Street suffered minor damage after a fire broke out in the attic space Saturday night.
Port Alberni Deputy Fire Chief Wes Patterson said the fire was caused by wood framing too close to the metal chimney pipe.
“If it’s a little too close over time it will pyrolize the wood, which brings down the ignition temperature of the wood, and it requires less heat over a shorter period of time to catch fire,” he said.
Patterson says people should have their heating systems checked before winter by a qualified technician, regardless of the type of fuel you use.
The fire and smoke damage was contained to the attic space and none of the 5 occupants were injured.
