Local education statistics improve

The Alberni Valley Community Foundation released their bi-annual Vital Signs report this week, showing great improvements in local education statistics.

Over the past 2 years the overall graduation rate has improved from 74 to 83%, the Indigenous Grad Rate has gone from 56 to 70% and the transition from secondary to post-secondary is at 69%, up from 61 in 2018.

School Distict 70 superintendant Greg Smyth said while the improvements are encouraging, they’re not about to rest on their laurels.

:16 “We’re happy but we’re not content,” he said. “We’re pleased to see the improvement. It speaks well for kids, it speaks well of our system, but we know we’re not there yet. It’s a real positive thing but we know we have room to improve and we’re going to keep doing that.”

While our overall grad rate has improved, it is still behind the provincial average of 89%

The Indigenous Grad rate locally is better than the provincial average of 69%
